Is a master's abroad worth it? An honest guide for Indian graduates

It depends on the person: a master's abroad tends to pay off when the loan is small next to the pay you can count on and the visa lets you stay long enough to earn it. With a large debt, a field that hires few foreigners or a plan that was only to live abroad, it can turn into years of repayment for little gain. A famous university does not change that: the loan gets repaid from a salary, so the job is what counts.

Last updated:

When is a master's abroad worth it, and when is it not?

Here, worth it means the degree earns back its cost, in money and time, by a margin you can live with. Each condition below comes with its reason.

It tends to pay off when...

  • The loan is small next to careful starting pay. Repayment runs in rupees soon after the course. Pay abroad starts later and arrives in another currency.
  • The work window is long enough, and your course meets its rules. Stay length sets how many months of abroad pay you can count.
  • Your field hires foreigners at entry level there. A visa buys time. An employer still has to hire you.
  • The total bill is low for what you get. A smaller loan clears sooner on the same pay. Some public universities in Europe may fit, so check each fee page and each visa money rule first.
  • You plan to return, and the degree lifts your pay in India. You repay from an Indian salary, so pay after return is the test. We hold no verified figure for that gain, so we quote none.

It tends not to pay off when...

  • The loan is large and one outcome carries the plan. Under SBI's student loan scheme, repayment starts after a fixed holiday once the course ends. A co-signing parent carries the risk too.
  • The plan rests on a rule that is moving, or on a lottery. Several destination rules have changed recently and some are under review.
  • Job ads in your field ask for a language you do not speak. Read real ads for your field in the country before you commit.
  • India could teach you the same skill for less, and you have not checked. A GATE-based M.Tech is the usual first look.
  • A scholarship you do not hold yet is carrying the plan. Treat the cost with no funding as your floor and any award as a bonus.

For scale: the USA allows 12 months of OPT after a degree, and Canada allows 3 years of work permit after a qualifying master's.

Is an MS in the USA, the UK or Germany worth it?

Each country has one question that matters most. Treat these as pointers. Each country gets its own page later.

  • USA: will the work-visa selection and the OPT rules still suit your pay and field when you graduate? Both have moved recently.
  • UK: is the Graduate visa long enough after the dated change shown further down, and does your course meet the study-in-the-UK rule?
  • Germany: what will your university charge in fees, and which language do jobs in your field ask for?

Job-search permit after a German degree: up to 18 months.

What are the five things that decide it?

Five checks decide it. Start with the one you care about most.

  1. Money: the loan against the pay you can count on.
  2. Work rights: how long you may stay and work after the degree.
  3. Your goal: work abroad, return to India, research or a skill.
  4. Your field: whether employers hire foreigners in it.
  5. The India alternative: M.Tech, a research route, or work first.

The platform will compare these in the order you pick. Until it opens, check each by hand below.

How much loan is too much for a master's abroad?

Count the full cost: tuition, living money and the salary you give up while you study. Subtract what you can bring without borrowing. Then set the loan against careful starting pay, the lower figure you could defend to a bank. Be honest here. The bank will be.

What to check: the loan against careful pay abroad, and against pay in India if you return. A loan that works only in the best case is a warning sign. The platform will apply a debt rule to exactly this. Money you must show for a visa is a separate figure, covered on proof of funds for a student visa.

Visa proof sets a minimum. Canada asks a single student outside Quebec to show CAD 23,448 a year on top of tuition and travel.

Does the post-study work visa make a master's abroad worth it?

The visa decides how many months of abroad pay you can count. Lengths differ, and so do the conditions. Some countries want a share of the course done there, and some rules change on a set date.

What to check: the length for your degree, the study-in-country condition, and the date you would apply. The full table with sources is on post-study work visas by country. For the UK, see the UK Graduate visa page.

What should I want out of a master's abroad?

Name the goal before the country. Four goals pull in different directions.

  • Work abroad for several years. Stay rules and the job market decide it.
  • Return to India with a stronger profile. Cost decides it, because you repay in rupees.
  • Research. Funded routes fit better than a paid taught master's.
  • A specific skill. Check whether an Indian programme already teaches it.

What to check: write your goal in one sentence, then name the rule or cost it depends on. Research changes the stay too: a UK PhD earns a Graduate visa of 3 years.

Can I find a job abroad after a master's in my field?

Field matters, because visa time only helps if employers hire you inside it. Before you commit, read real job ads in your field for the country and note which language they ask for. In the USA the work-visa lottery is now weighted (Weighted selection, final rule (2026)), so check how it treats entry-level pay before you rely on it.

We hold no verified job-outcome data for Indian master's graduates in most destinations, so we say that instead of guessing. Australia is the one exception in our research: an official graduate survey covers international graduates there, though its public page shows no split for India.

In Germany, pay matters once the job-search permit ends. The EU Blue Card needs a gross salary of at least EUR 50,700 a year, or EUR 45,934.20 a year in shortage occupations.

Is it better to do a master's in India or abroad?

Staying is a real option. Compare it on the same measures as the abroad option: cost, pay, time to earning and risk. The platform will put India and work first beside the best abroad option, and say plainly when staying is stronger.

Working first keeps your salary and savings coming and lets you borrow less. The trade is a later start on the stay-back clock.

What to check: GATE dates and PMRF routes on PMRF and GATE route. A GATE score stays valid for 3 years, so working first does not waste it.

Is a master's abroad worth it for me? A short self-check

Answer for yourself. There is no score and no total. Read one answer at a time, starting with the question that matters most to you. If two answers point different ways, the one on your top priority leads. Open each question below.

  1. How would you pay for it?
Savings or family money, no loan
Most abroad paths stay open. Keep a cushion for a slow start.
A loan I could repay from careful pay
Abroad and India both tend to fit. Test the loan against pay you could defend to a bank.
    A large loan, or a co-signer
India, work first or a low-cost public route in Europe tend to fit better. A scholarship you have not won does not count.
  2. What do you want most from it?
A job abroad for several years
Paths with a clear post-study work rule and hiring in your field tend to fit.
A stronger profile back in India
Low-cost paths tend to fit. You repay in rupees, and we hold no verified pay gain to lean on.
    A research career
Funded research routes tend to fit better than a paid taught master's.
  3. What is your field?
    Software, data or research
Read real job ads in your target countries and note the language they ask for.
    Other engineering, science or management
Check how many employers in your target country hire foreigners in it. We have the least to say here.
    Not sure yet
Look at what you could enter in India too. Pick the field before the path.
  4. How would a long wait for a first job feel?
    I could cover many months
Abroad with some debt tends to be easier to carry.
    It would strain my family
Lower-debt paths tend to fit. Work first is worth pricing.
  5. Do you have work experience?
No, I am finishing or just finished
All paths are open. Work first is still worth pricing.
    A few years of work
Work first and studying now can both fit, so price both. A GATE score you hold stays valid for its period.
    Many years
The salary you give up counts as cost, so check what the degree changes in your role.
  6. Would part of the degree be in India?
    No, the whole degree abroad
The country's own stay rules apply in full.
Yes, a split or dual degree
A work visa follows only if the abroad part meets the awarding country's rule. Check programme by programme.
  7. Could you work in another language?
    English only
Destinations where English is the everyday working language tend to fit.
    I would learn it
Germany and France can fit, but plan time and money for the language.

None of these answers is a prediction. We do not estimate admission or hiring odds.

Which paths do people overlook?

Four routes get less attention than they deserve, and none is a recommendation. Each trades something away. We state the limit.

Is Germany or France cheaper for a master's?

They can cost less than the English-speaking destinations, but the total depends on the university and the money you must show for the visa. Most German state universities charge no tuition for most master's programmes, but not everywhere. Baden-Württemberg charges non-EU students a tuition fee: EUR 1,500 per semester. Bavaria lets universities set fees for non-EU students. Check each university's fee page. Every student also pays a semester contribution, which is not tuition: EUR 70 to 430 per semester. For France, public master's tuition for non-EU students is EUR 3,950 a year. Where a visa money figure is still being verified, the table says so. Check which language each course and employer asks for.

Can part of my master's be in India?

Sometimes. The abroad part has to meet the awarding country's own rule. The UK Graduate visa asks for a minimum time studied in the UK, so a short exchange semester does not meet it. Other countries set their own share-of-study rules. Do not assume a degree from a foreign campus in India brings a work-visa right. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has published a notice on tie-ups with foreign providers it does not recognise, so check any such programme on the UGC site before you pay. It also lists the Indian institutions eligible to run twinning, joint and dual degrees.

Are there funded routes, like PMRF or a funded PhD?

Yes, though a funded PhD is a different bet from a master's. It can cover living costs, but it takes years and points to a research career. Offers are competitive, so we never count one before it exists. PMRF pays Rs 70,000 a month in the first years of a PhD at a granting institute. Abroad, DAAD funds research stays in Germany for doctoral students based outside Germany. UKRI sets a minimum PhD stipend but pays fees only up to the home rate, so an international student may have to cover the gap. Australia sets a base stipend under its Research Training Program.

How do I read a Reddit thread about whether it was worth it?

Reddit holds real lived stories, but each thread is one person's numbers from one year. Before you trust a thread, look for five things:

  • The year they graduated, since rules move.
  • The size of the loan and who co-signed.
  • Their field and entry-level pay.
  • Their visa status when they started work.
  • Whether they stayed or returned.

A thread that leaves these out is only a story. A happy ending is still one ending, and rules that held at their graduation may not hold today. That is why the tables here carry dates.

Is studying abroad still worth it, and what could change that?

Three things can move the answer without warning: policy, the rupee rate and the job market.

  • Policy. Rules can change on a set date. The UK Graduate visa gets shorter on a date shown in the table: 2 years before it, 18 months after. In the USA, selection is weighted and other rules are under review.
  • The rupee rate. A weaker rupee raises the rupee cost of tuition and living. It also raises the rupee value of pay earned abroad. The platform tests both directions.
  • The job market. Hiring can turn within a year, and few countries publish outcomes for Indian graduates. Read the dates before the numbers.

Each figure on this page shows the date we checked it.
